Chapter 4
FANBOYS UNITED
A wild case of nerves making him sweat like he was in a sauna, Griffin adjusted his jacket and tie, wiped his damp hands on his jeans, and looked at his watch for the hundredth time since waking up at a ridiculous four in the morning, eight long hours ago.
It’s finally time.
After checking himself in the hotel-room mirror one more time, Griffin strode to the bathroom and banged on the closed door. “Drew, come on! I have to meet my handler downstairs in ten minutes. I don’t want to be late.” He checked the time again and realized Drew had been in the bathroom for over an hour. After a year and a half of being a couple, Griffin knew this was not normal for Drew. A sudden pounding in Griffin’s chest replaced the nausea in his stomach. “Hey!” Knocking on the door again, faster and harder this time, Griffin put his ear to the wood, searching for sounds of distress. “Are you okay?”
Right then, Drew whipped open the door, struck a pose, and Griffin screeched at the top of his lungs and stumbled back against the wall. In front of him, Drew stood costumed from head to foot in a black superhero costume as tight as a second skin, with waves of silver and green wrapped around the thighs and arms. The upper half of his face and hair was masked too—every bit of the costume together created an exact replica of Griffin’s superhero, The Wave Breaker, that Griffin had created based on Drew. Oh my good God. Drew’s body was still the sickest, most beautiful thing Griffin had ever looked upon, and seeing him like this, his muscles hugged by this skintight fabric, his strong jaw highlighted by the dark material concealing half his facial features, made Griffin’s mouth run dry.
The graphic novel had come out two months ago, and in an hour Griffin would do his first ever panel discussion about all of his work, as well as do his first official autograph signings, at this small Comic Con. He’d never seen anybody dressed up like The Wave Breaker before, let alone any of his other characters.
“Well?” Drew put his hands on his hips in a dark hero pose. “What do you think?”
Griffin sputtered in stupor and awe a half dozen times before he finally blurted, “Oh my God.” His hand over his mouth, he circled the magnificence that was Drew. “What is going on?”
Even though his upper face was masked, Drew still radiated the twinkle of pleasure through his mercury eyes. “Charlie put me in touch with one of his Cosplay friends who makes all her own stuff. I told her what I wanted, and she made me this.” Arms spread wide, he turned in a circle. “It’s pretty sweet, huh?”
“It’s incredible.” Almost afraid to touch—this was his superhero come to life after all—Griffin brushed his fingers against Drew again and again only to repeatedly quickly pull away. “I had no idea you were doing this.
